Taken - A song for truth and reconciliation on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Taken - A song for truth and reconciliation on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Alana Levandoski is a member of our community with a powerful voice and a gift for songwriting. She's been giving those gifts back to community for a long while now, and this new lyric video and recording is a timely gift for those working towards truth and reconciliation on this, National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Three Powerful Events in One Weekend

Three Powerful Events in One Weekend

This weekend there are so many good things going on in our city. I’m one of the hosts of CBC RadioActive’s InCrowd, where it’s my job to say ‘here’s what you should check out in the arts scene this weekend’. That job gets a lot harder come summer.

For those of you interested in the power of art for social change, the choice is easy this weekend. Bleeding Heart is involved with not one, but THREE incredible events on Saturday (and beyond) that you won’t want to miss.

How the (Bridge) Singing Started

How the (Bridge) Singing Started

We are in a living room playing music for each other. 8 of us or so. Each time I hear one of these friends play a song, I get a peek into their heart. I see something–hear something–I didn't know was there.

We meet for weeks like this, sharing new songs and with them a part of our souls. We cry. We heal. We come together because we are all attending the same small church of 40 or 50 people and looking for a way to sing songs that don't belong in a church service. We are making music together and making connections, and we want to share all of this with the rest of our community.

The idea is called Bridge Songs. It will be a collection of songs from Urban Bridge Church.

Alana Levandoski Sings the Whole Story

When you can get poets Joel McKerrow, Malcolm Guite, Scott Cairns and Luci Shaw to contribute to a track on your album, you must be doing something right.

You'll find all four poets on "The Christ Hymn", featured in the video below. I highly recommend you sit back and soak that video in as small celebration of this Easter Monday. In fact, I'm going to do that right after I finish this post.

A Very Bleeding Heart Christmas Playlist

A Very Bleeding Heart Christmas Playlist

For some (like me) Christmas festivities already get rolling tonight. With the help of the right music, they can get rocking, too. Just in time for your Christmas gatherings, may I present to you The 12 Songs of Christmas - A Very Bleeding Heart Christmas Playlist

In no particular order, here are 12 songs that swing from deep meaning to deep fun. Some old favourites mixed in with some you might have missed. Even some from friends of Bleeding Heart Art Space. All of these gems would be welcome at a Bleeding Heart Christmas party, with the hopes that someone would track down the host to ask, ‘who is this singing?’ at least once.

Photos from Bridge Songs: Dear Edmonton,

Bridge Songs: Dear Edmonton brought together more than 30 artists (visual, musicians, writers) to create and share work about our fair city. It was a great evening, captured on camera by the fine folks at #WEAREYEG, and Aaron Maxwell Vanimere, to whom we are ever so grateful.
