Kaleido Family Arts Festival

757 Thank You's for Kaleido

757 Thank You's for Kaleido

I emerge from this Kaleido weekend grateful.

I give thanks for the hundreds who have made Kaleido Family Arts Festival possible for over a decade. I give thanks for Christy Morin and her team of dreamers and doers. I give thanks for the roster of volunteers who enabled Bleeding Heart to remain open for the entire weekend! I give thanks for TJ who got our lights installed in time for this show and for Daniel who built the wall and for Wenda and Jack who painted everything last week. I give thanks for Mat's last minute sound system help. I give thanks for our donors and thanks for those 700 guests.

Even deeper than those thanks, in the well of my heart, is a different gratitude.

Kaleido is Coming - Help Us Welcome Visitors!

Kaleido is Coming - Help Us Welcome Visitors!

Our gallery is located within the 'Kaleido zone', on a repurposed street with access to thousands of walkers. I cannot wait to throw open our doors and introduce Kaleido visitors to the work of Brandon Atkinson, our first artist of this season.

Brandon's work offers Indigenous stories a visual telling that fuses a tattoo aesthetic with traditional Indigenous elements. His bold lines and monochromatic palate create images that draw us in for a closer look. Our attention is rewarded with numerous details, symbols and storylines.

Can you help us share this work with Kaleido guests?

You have to see the light

You have to see the light

Do you see bright and beautiful people or the ugliness of the world smudged across faces? Do you see a marching mob or a happy parade?

Incline your ear. Do you hear gunshots or fireworks?

This past week has been one of contrast for Alberta Avenue. For a community in transition. A community trying desperately to emerge from its chrysalis. This weekend at Kaleido Festival we saw the butterfly. Last week, we saw blood on the streets.

Five shootings last week. All nearby. All reminders that there is still a darkness here. That people still do ugly things to one another. That it gets so dark you want to hide. To build what walls you can manage and light a candle for you and yours.

But love was never easy and love was never safe.

I Wonder as I Wander at Kaleido

I Wonder as I Wander at Kaleido

From a vast seashore of memory, let me pluck this one moment. Let me pick it up and hold it in the sunshine. Let the golden light reveal its many coloured faces. Let me hold it to your ear so you can listen for the ocean.

This is what I hear.

Kaleido Moments and 34 Photos for #ArtsTalkTuesday

This past weekend thousands of guests crowded the cordoned off streets of Alberta Avenue for the Kaleido Family Arts Festival. Perhaps you were one of them?

The Bleeding Heart Art Space provided volunteer care in the 'Volunteer Luxe Lounge' all weekend. This meant we decorated the room, brought in some crazy lamps, kept things clean and tidy and served up food the festival brought in. It also meant a lot of smiles and great conversations with some very dedicated volunteers.

At some point, I left the Volunteer Lounge and wandered the streets. I took some photos. I had some moments.

What moment stands out for you from this past weekend's festival? If you weren't able to make it, do you have any questions about what was there?

Enjoy the photos and stories below!
